“Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another.”  -  John Dewey

Goals are an important strategy to our purpose. They provide guidance to be reached by effort. When we take the time to sit down, write down on paper, the goals we intend to achieve, our personal drive kicks in to accomplish.

But many times these goals aren’t met. Why is that?

By being involved in Network Marketing, a communication business, we set goals to speak with others and describe the benefits of our program, service or products. We set out and talked to friends and family who simply shut us down. Those goals are now weakened.

Goals seem to have limited meaning. They may have begun with a dream but the dream is not strong enough to establish reachable goals. So how can things be changed to strengthen the quality of reaching the high levels we set to achieve our dreams?

This idea was bothering me for a while. I saw my goals not being achieved and wondered why? Then it hit, because goals were less personal.

Promises are personal. They are my responsibility to complete. Therefore, I believe that our ‘goals list’ should be modified. Re-evaluating the goals I had set and modifying the beginning words to “I Promise to…” made me responsible for completing the statement.

Funny thing, my list was now much shorter. I am making a promise to myself, holding only me accountable, for accomplishing these promises. Whoa!

Can I actually promise myself to do what is necessary to make sure that I do these things?

That is a powerful question. I must look into the mirror and honestly say I will take the bull by the horns and do what is necessary. Promises require us to listen to the words first before we state them, because now they have a completely different meaning.

These words are coming from inside me and are a reflection of my actions. Only I know what I am capable of and to make a promise that I can not do shows those inadequacies. Do I want others to know that as well? So now I hear statements made differently.

It is easy to say “I will do that” and forget to others, like I will take out the trash but continue reading that book or watching that sports event, then seeing that disappointment in others for not accomplishing simple tasks. How disheartening that was.

Now, I must first analyze my attitude: to know I can accomplish, with effort, what I state I shall do.

I challenge you to rework your own ‘goals list’ and see how different it becomes when you state that you promise to do this task. Does your list change dramatically? Get shorter? Longer?

Then the steps you put together to achieve your promises will be more defined, more focused and you will achieve what you set out to do. Let me know your progress, if you will.
